There is a reason for that. The word “customized” hides two completely different categories of work. One costs an afternoon. The other requires structural depth most providers do not have. The distinction between them is the single most useful thing you can learn before signing anything.
The Word Everyone Uses
Almost every AI implementation provider describes their work as customized. This is the standard claim across the market. And in most cases, it is not a lie. The work is real. The question is what kind of work it is.
Here is what “customized” typically means in a provider’s proposal. They adjust the tone. They set the output format and length. They select the target audience. They configure the communication channel. They upload your company documents for reference. They connect your data sources.
These are real adjustments. They produce noticeable differences in the output. And they are all the same category of work.

Configuration means telling the AI how to behave. What tone to use. How long to write. What format to follow. Every AI tool on the market offers these settings. A person with no technical background can do this work in an afternoon. Configuration is not the problem. Calling it the other thing is.
What Configuration Actually Does

The work is described in terms of what the AI will know.
The pricing test follows directly. Configuration work is available in every AI tool on the market. It has real value. But that value has a ceiling, and the ceiling is low. If the price on the proposal suggests structural work, now you know the question that reveals whether structure is actually being built.
